Before You Schedule Your Rental Inspection
To help make your inspection and licensing process as smooth as possible, we recommend having the following registration numbers and property information available.
1. MDE Tracking Number
What it is:
A unique owner identification number issued by the Maryland Department of the Environment (MDE) for owners of regulated pre-1978 rental properties.
Why you need it:
This number is required to register and renew eligible rental properties in Maryland's Lead Rental Registry. It also links your lead inspection certificates to your ownership account.

2. Property Number (Real Estate Tax Account Number)
What it is:
A unique property identification number assigned by the Maryland State Department of Assessments and Taxation (SDAT).
Why you need it:
MDE uses this number to identify the correct property when registering rental units. It is different from your street address and is required during the registration process.
Find your Property Number:
Maryland SDAT Real Property Search
When you find your property in the results, the property number will be made up of: Ward, Section, Block, And Lot. *
3. Baltimore City Rental License Number
What it is:
The official rental license issued by Baltimore City's Department of Housing & Community Development (DHCD).
Why you need it:
Most rental properties in Baltimore City must have an active Rental License before they can be legally rented. A passing rental inspection is required before the license is issued or renewed.

4. Lead Inspection Certificate Number (Pre-1978 Properties)
What it is:
The certificate number assigned after a property successfully passes a Maryland-accredited lead inspection.
Why you need it:
This certificate is required for most pre-1978 rental properties and must be entered when registering with MDE. Landlords must also provide a copy to tenants at the beginning of a tenancy and as otherwise required by law.
5. Date of Most Recent Tenant Move-In
What it is:
The date the current tenant began occupying the rental unit.
Why you need it:
Maryland requires this information during lead rental registration because it determines when lead risk reduction requirements apply.
6. Date Tenants Received Required Lead Information
What it is:
The date tenants received Maryland's required lead hazard educational materials and Notice of Tenants' Rights.
Why you need it:
Property owners must provide this information during registration to demonstrate compliance with Maryland's lead laws.
